The Office That Has Not Written Back

You know that somebody who applied four days after you heard back in March.

You know it because you read it at half past eleven one night, and it went through you like cold water, and you have thought about it perhaps two hundred times since.

You know the range. You know what the published guidance says and you know that almost nobody's actual experience matches the published guidance. You know which month people applying in your category seem to be hearing from, and you know it has moved twice and once went backwards.

You have a folder of screenshots.

And none of it is your case. Not one line of it. Your case is a reference number in a building, and the only people who know anything about it are the ones inside that building, and they have not written.

You go to the forums anyway, every night, sometimes twice.

Because it is the only place in the world where the subject exists outside your own head. Everywhere else the matter is simply not spoken of: at work it would be indiscreet, at home it upsets people, and there is nobody to talk to about the thing that is running underneath every hour of your life.

So you read strangers, and their timelines, and their good news, and their bad news.

And you have started to feel each of their outcomes as though it were information about yours, which it is not, and cannot be, and has never once been.

What this page will not do

I am not going to give you legal advice. I am not qualified, your situation has particulars I know nothing about, and taking guidance about your status from an article would be a genuinely bad idea.

I am going to say this plainly instead: if you do not have a proper adviser, get one. A regulated immigration adviser or a solicitor, or one of the charities that does this without charging. Not a forum, however knowledgeable the people on it sound, and however generous they are being. There are things about your case that only somebody looking at your papers can see.

I am not going to tell you the waiting is fine, or that it does not matter, or that it should not have this much of you. It has your life in it. Of course it has this much of you.

And I am not going to promise you an outcome. Nobody can and the ones who imply otherwise are dangerous.

You are not in this delay because you have done something wrong. Scripture says the Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble, Psalm 9:9, and oppressed there describes somebody pressed on by a weight larger than themselves, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in a courtyard at half past eleven.

The verse repeats itself on purpose

There is a line at the end of Psalm 27 that says the same thing twice, and the repetition is the point.

Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.Psalm 27:14

Wait, I say, on the Lord. He has already said it. He says it again in the same verse, and the second time he adds I say, which is what a person does when they know the first time did not land.

That tells you the psalm knows something about waiting: that it is not held by being told once. It slips. You agree to it in the evening and by half past eleven you are back on the phone. None of that is mine to declare on my own. Scripture said it first in Psalm 27:14, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings it the distance.

And notice what sits between the two instructions. Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart. Courage is named as the thing waiting requires, which means waiting is being described as difficult rather than as passive. Nobody needs courage for an easy thing.

The strengthening is His verb. You are not being told to be strong at a building. You are being told that a heart in a wait like yours gets strengthened by somebody other than itself.

You are not weak for finding this hard. Scripture says wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart, Psalm 27:14, and courage is prescribed precisely because the waiting is understood to cost something, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the strengthening in a person who has to do this again tomorrow.

Their news is not your news

Here is the thing that will save you the most, and it is not comfort, it is accuracy.

Every timeline you read is one person's case, decided by particular people, on particular papers, in particular circumstances. The variables are not visible to you and they are not visible to the person posting, which is why the forum's collective picture keeps moving and once went backwards.

So when somebody who applied four days after you hears back, that is not a fact about your case. It contains no information about your case whatsoever. It feels like information because it is adjacent in time, and adjacency is not evidence.

You have been treating a stream of unrelated events as a signal about your own life, twice a night, for months. Scripture put that in writing long before you read it here, in Psalm 27:14, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes written words land.

That is not stupidity. It is a mind starved of any real news doing the only thing available, which is to look for a pattern. But the pattern is not there, and the looking is costing you every evening you have.

You are not going to find your answer in somebody else's. Scripture says the secret things belong unto the Lord our God, Deuteronomy 29:29, and the timing of a decision made in an office you cannot enter is exactly such a thing, and the Holy Spirit is not withholding a result from you that a forum is quietly holding.

The thing you actually need is a person

Notice what pulls you back at half past eleven, because it is not the data.

It is that the forum is the only place where this exists. Everywhere else you are a person with a job and a family and a normal week, and the largest fact of your life is unmentionable. I have no authority to say that by myself. Scripture carries it in Psalm 27:14, and the Holy Spirit carries it to you.

That is loneliness, not research. And it will not be met by more reading, because reading is not company however many voices are in it.

So find one person. Someone who knows your situation and will let you say the true sentence out loud once a week: there is still nothing, and it is very hard. A friend, a pastor, somebody at a community organization, somebody who has been through it and is now out the other side.

That does one thing the forum can never do. It puts the subject in a room with another human being, where it stops growing.

You are not meant to carry this with nobody. Scripture says two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labor, Ecclesiastes 4:9, and it is a plain practical observation about what a second person changes, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves somebody into a chair beside a person carrying a thing they cannot mention.
