Your brother rang on Sunday and said one thing. Your sister rang on Monday and said the opposite, and both of them were gentle about it, and both of them said they would support whatever you decided.
Your aunt has a view she has expressed twice without being asked. Your daughter, who is twenty-four and has been better about visiting than anybody, said something on Thursday that has stayed with you.
Four people. All of them love her. None of them is being difficult.
And you cannot use any of it.
That is what has been so disorienting, because you were raised to think that asking the family was how a thing like this gets decided, and you have asked, and what has come back is unusable.
Here is what you have half worked out and not said.
None of them is disinterested. That is not an accusation; there is no such thing as a disinterested relative in a decision about a mother.
Your brother lives four hours away and has not been able to help much, and something in his advice is about that. Your sister was the one who was there in the spring and is exhausted, and something in hers is about that. Your aunt watched her own sister go through this and is frightened. Your daughter loves her grandmother uncomplicatedly, which is a gift, and it means she is arguing from a version of her that has not been in the house at four in the morning.
Every piece of advice you have been given is true counsel and it is also carrying something, and you have been trying to weigh them as though they were opinions.
What this page will not do
I am not going to tell you what should happen to your mother. I have not met her, I do not know what she needs or what is available where you are, and a page that leans on a decision like that has no business existing. None of that is mine to declare on my own. Scripture said it first in Proverbs 11:14, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings it the distance.
I am going to say the practical part. Get a needs assessment if you have not, and ask the social worker or the GP or whoever is involved to say plainly what they think is safe. That is the one voice in this that is professionally disinterested, and it is the one you have not weighted enough, because it does not come from somebody who loves her. Scripture put that in writing long before you read it here, in Proverbs 11:14, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes written words land.
And ask your mother, properly, if she is able to say. Her view is not one of the four and it is not one among five; it is the first one.
What I am going to do is make the family's counsel usable, because at the moment it is not.
You are not failing at this because good advice conflicted. Scripture says the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, Psalm 34:18, and it makes no exception for a heart breaking over a decision about a mother, and the Holy Spirit is at that table with a woman who has taken four phone calls in five days.
The verse says multitude, and it means it
There is a line in Proverbs that gets quoted at people in your position, usually to encourage them to ask more people.
Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellers there is safety.Proverbs 11:14
Read what it promises and what it does not.
It promises safety. Not clarity. Not consensus, and not a decision.
Safety is what you get when several people have looked at a thing and no one blind spot has gone unchallenged. That is what has actually happened to you this week: between the four of them, every angle on your mother's situation has now been raised by somebody. The thing your sister said about nights is real. The thing your brother said about cost is real. Your aunt's fear is data even though it is fear. Your daughter noticed something none of the rest of you had.
You are safer than you were on Saturday. You are not clearer, and the verse never promised you would be.
You are not without the benefit the verse describes. Scripture says in the multitude of counsellers there is safety, Proverbs 11:14, and safety is the stated good rather than agreement, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes four partial views into a fuller picture in the person who has to hold them.
Naming what each one carries
Here is the practical move, and it is the whole of this page.
Take a piece of paper and write the four names. Beside each one, write in a few words what you think they are carrying.
Brother: four hours away, cannot help, knows it. Sister: did the spring on her own, exhausted, has not said so. Aunt: watched her own sister, frightened. Daughter: loves her simply, has not been there at four in the morning.
Now read their advice again with that written down.
It becomes usable immediately. Your brother's position stops being an opinion to be weighed against your sister's and becomes a man saying, in the only language available to him, that he wishes he could do more. Your sister's stops being obstruction and becomes a woman at the end of her strength.
None of it is dishonest. All of it is information, and most of the information is about the person speaking, and that is worth having.
You are not obliged to treat love as though it were neutral. Scripture says charity thinketh no evil... beareth all things, believeth all things, 1 Corinthians 13:5-7, and believing all things means reading the best construction into what somebody says rather than taking it at surface value, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person hear what is underneath a difficult phone call.
Who decides
You do, or you and whoever is legally alongside you.
That is not a burden this page is adding; it is the situation, and it has been true since the spring, and pretending it is a family vote has cost you a week.
They will support you. Both of them said so, and they meant it, and people usually do mean it about a decision they were not going to have to make.
And here is the thing that will help most in six months. Whatever you decide, one of them will privately have preferred something else, and that is survivable and normal and it does not mean you failed to consult properly. It means four people who love the same woman looked at an impossible situation and did not all land in the same place, which is what happens.
You are not carrying this decision without help even though you are carrying it. Scripture says cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee, Psalm 55:22, and the sustaining is promised to the one carrying rather than to a committee, and the Holy Spirit is present in a decision that has to be made by somebody.
Nothing here decides where your mother lives.
What changes tonight is that you stop weighing four people's love as though it were four opinions.
Write the names and what each one is carrying. Read their advice again through that. It will stop being contradictory and start being four true reports from four positions, which is what it always was.
Then take the professional view seriously, because that is the one voice in this without a stake, and ask your mother what she wants, because her view is first and not fifth.
Then decide, and tell them, and do not reopen it. Not because they do not matter, but because a decision that is reopened every Sunday is a decision nobody is living inside, least of all your mother.
You are not less safe for having asked, and you were never promised agreement. Scripture says in the multitude of counsellers there is safety, Proverbs 11:14, and the Holy Spirit has been in this kitchen through four phone calls in five days.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, at the table. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak was given to you and a week of hard phone calls has not withdrawn it. Scripture carries every line here and the Holy Spirit brings them the distance. Nothing here commands anybody's view and nothing here promises an outcome; He answers in His own way and the outcome is His, and however He answers, none of it is a verdict on you or on her.
- Job of weighing four people's guilt as though it were four opinions, you were never given to me and I set you down. The Word of God says in the multitude of counsellers there is safety, and in the name of Jesus I take the safety I was promised instead of the agreement I was not.
- Idea that this is a family vote, get out of this house. Scripture says cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee, Psalm 55:22, and the Holy Spirit has never once made the sustaining conditional on four people landing in the same place.
- Lord, every one of them loves her and not one of them is standing anywhere neutral, and You have been in this kitchen for all five days. The names are written down with what they carry, and the page is face down, and I am asking her what she wants.
