I Keep Swapping It Out

You had one in January and it was good. You had it on the mirror and you said it in the car and for about a week it felt like something under your feet.

Then it went flat.

So you got another. That one lasted longer, maybe three weeks, and then one Tuesday you read it and it was just words, and you could hear how thin it sounded against the thing you are carrying.

You are on your fifth since January.

And each time the same shape repeats. The new one arrives with weight. You feel it. Then the weight drains out over some number of days, and you conclude, without ever saying it, that this verse was not big enough for your situation, and you go looking for a stronger one.

There is a thought underneath the swapping that you have never quite said out loud, and it is this: that what you are carrying might be bigger than anything in the book.

That is not blasphemy and it is not a failure. It is what a person concludes after five verses have gone flat, and any honest person in your position would draw the same conclusion from the same evidence.

But the evidence is being misread. What has been going flat is not the verse.

What this page will not do

I am not going to give you a stronger verse. There is not a stronger one. That is not me being unhelpful; it is that the whole idea of a hierarchy of verses by strength is the thing that has been costing you, and adding a sixth would keep the machine running.

I am not going to tell you the swapping is unspiritual. It comes from taking Scripture seriously, which is more than can be said for a lot of people.

And I am not going to tell you that what you are carrying is smaller than it is. It is large. That is not in question anywhere on this page. Scripture holds that ground in Psalm 46:1, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it into a room like this one.

What I am going to do is give you one, and then explain what has actually been happening for five months, because once you see it you will stop.

You are not carrying something too big for God. Scripture says is any thing too hard for the Lord, Genesis 18:14, and it is asked as a question by God Himself about a situation everybody in the room had already written off, and the Holy Spirit is not standing at the edge of your situation working out whether it is within range.

Here it is

That is yours. Stop looking for a stronger one; this is where you stand from now on.

Look at why this one, because it answers your specific problem rather than a general one.

A very present help in trouble. Three of those words are doing work.

Present is a location word, not an intensity word. The verse is not making a claim about how powerful the help feels. It is telling you where the help is.

In trouble is the second. Not before it, so that the trouble never arrives. Not after it, once the thing has resolved and everybody can see how it went. In it, while it is happening, which is where you are and where you have been since January. This rests on Scripture in Psalm 46:1, and on the Holy Spirit who makes what is written a living thing.

And very present is the writer piling it on, because he knows the natural fear is that God is somewhere else during the worst part.

That is what you need. Not a bigger claim. A located one.

You are not being helped from a distance. Scripture says God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, Psalm 46:1, and the help is placed inside the trouble rather than at the far end of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes presence a thing a person can lean on when nothing has changed.

What actually went flat

Here is the mechanism, and it is the most useful thing on this page.

When a verse arrives it comes with feeling. That is real and it is a gift and it is not manufactured by you. The Holy Spirit does bring things alive to people, and He did it in January and again in February.

But the feeling is not the verse and it was never meant to be permanent. Feelings decay. All of them do. That is not a comment on your spiritual state; it is how human beings are built, and it happens to the strongest verse in the Bible held by the most devout person alive.

So what went flat after four days was the emotional accompaniment, not the sentence. The sentence was exactly as true on day five as on day one.

And every time you swapped, you were doing something quite specific without knowing it: you were chasing the feeling, and you were using verses to get it. Scripture already said it in Psalm 46:1, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the work, not the sentence.

That is why the intervals are getting shorter. Anything chased for a feeling gives less each time, and it is why the fifth one barely lasted a week.

You are not experiencing a decline in faith. Scripture says the grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever, Isaiah 40:8, and it distinguishes plainly between what fades and what stands, and the Holy Spirit does not withdraw a verse's truth when its first warmth passes.

What sufficiency actually is

You have been testing sufficiency by asking whether the verse feels equal to the weight. None of that is mine to declare on my own. Scripture said it first in Psalm 46:1, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings it the distance.

That test cannot be passed. Nothing feels equal to a thing that is genuinely large; that is what large means.

Sufficiency in Scripture is never a feeling. It is a fact about supply. When Paul was told my grace is sufficient for thee, he was in the middle of something that had not gone away and had just been told it was not going to. He did not report feeling that it was enough. He was told it was, and then he stood on the telling.

That is what you are being invited to do with Psalm 46:1. Not to feel that it covers this. To stand on it while it does not feel like anything at all, which is most days, and which is what standing is.

You are not being asked to generate a feeling of sufficiency. Scripture says my grace is sufficient for thee, 2 Corinthians 12:9, and it was said to a man whose request had just been declined rather than to a man who felt reassured, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a stated sufficiency hold in a person who cannot feel it.
