One WordIsaiah 43:2

The Verse Says When and Not If

This message is for wanting a verse that says the hard thing will not come, and being handed one that says when it does you will not go through it by yourself

You have read it before. Most people have. And you read it again last night and something in you went slightly cold, and it took a while to work out what.

It is the first word.

When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.Isaiah 43:2

When.

Not if. Not lest. Not so that you never have to. When.

You had been hoping, without ever putting it into a sentence, that somewhere in there was a verse that said the thing you are afraid of would not arrive. You would not have admitted to that. You know the theology; you could explain to anybody else why that is not how it works.

But hope does not consult theology at two in the morning.

So you have been reading with a particular ear, listening for exemption, and every time you get to a verse like this one you feel the first word land and something in you deflates slightly and you move on to the next.

There is no verse that says if. That is the whole of the bad news, and it is worth having plainly rather than in installments.

What there is, in this one, is something else entirely, and it is not a consolation prize.

What this page will not do

I am not going to promise you exemption by any other route. That is what has been quietly running underneath the reading, and every version of it is false, and false comfort costs more later than honest hardness costs now.

I am not going to tell you off for hoping. Hoping that a hard thing will not come is not weak faith. It is what any person hopes, and Jesus Himself asked for a cup to pass, which settles the question of whether it is permitted.

And I am not going to give you a selection. You get this one. It was chosen for the exact thing your ear has been listening for.

You are not being denied a promise you were entitled to. Scripture says my grace is sufficient for thee, 2 Corinthians 12:9, and it was said to a man whose request for removal had just been refused for the third time, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a sufficiency stated rather than felt hold in somebody at two in the morning.

What the verse actually gives

Read it again slowly and count what is promised, because it is more than people notice.

I will be with thee. That is the first thing and it is the whole spine of it.

They shall not overflow thee. Not the waters shall not come. The waters shall not close over your head.

Thou shalt not be burned. Not there shall be no fire. You will not be consumed by it.

Do you see the shape? Every clause concedes the thing and then denies its final power. The waters are real, and they will not drown you. The fire is real, and it will not finish you.

That is a different promise from the one you were hunting for, and it is a great deal more useful, because the one you were hunting for could only ever have been kept by rearranging the world, and this one is kept by somebody being in the water with you.

You are not going to be consumed by what is coming. Scripture says when thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee, Isaiah 43:2, and the going through is assumed while the drowning is denied, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in water that has actually arrived rather than in a version of your life where it does not.

Why exemption would not have helped

This is worth sitting with, because it will take the sting out of the first word.

Imagine you had found it. A verse promising that this particular thing would not come to you.

You would still not have known whether it applied. You would have read it, then read the surrounding chapter, then wondered whether it was said to a specific people at a specific time, then found somebody's commentary, then found a different commentary. That is what happens to every promise of exemption held by an honest person: it turns into an interpretive problem exactly at the moment it is needed.

And there is a worse thing. If you had believed it, and the thing had come anyway, you would have lost more than the thing. You would have lost your footing with God at the exact hour you needed it most, because you would have been holding a promise that did not hold.

Isaiah 43:2 cannot fail that way. It has already conceded the water. There is no version of events that falsifies it, which means it is available to you all the way down.

You are not holding something that circumstances can break. Scripture says the grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever, Isaiah 40:8, and standing for ever is a property of what is written rather than of the conditions around it, and the Holy Spirit carries a sentence like that into the exact week it was needed for.

What company actually does

You have been slightly dismissive of presence, and I understand why. When a person is frightened, I will be with you can sound like the thing people say when they cannot do anything. It is written, in Isaiah 43:2, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes what is written off a page and into a life.

But look at what it does in practice.

Two people can be in identical circumstances and one is destroyed and one is not, and the difference is very rarely the circumstances. It is whether they were alone in them. Being alone in something is not one factor among several; it is the multiplier on all of them.

That is what is being removed here. Not the water. The aloneness in the water, and the aloneness is what actually drowns people.

And notice the tense. I will be with thee, said in advance, about a thing that has not happened. He is committing to be there before either of you knows what it will look like.

You are not going to be in it by yourself. Scripture says I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee, Hebrews 13:5, and it is a double negative in the original for emphasis, a refusal stated twice, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes company a thing a person can feel the weight of when the water is actually at the door.

The breakthrough

Nothing here promises you exemption and the first word of the verse is still when.

What changes today is what you are listening for. Scripture settles that in Isaiah 43:2, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it rather than these words.

Stop reading Scripture with an ear for if. There is nothing in there and the listening has been quietly hardening you against verses that were trying to help.

Take this one. Read it outdoors if you can, where there is actual weather, because a verse about water and fire is better said somewhere with sky in it than in a room.

And when the fear comes, do not go looking for exemption. Say the three clauses and let each one do its work: the waters will not overflow you, the fire will not burn you, and He will be there.

That is what is on offer. It is honest, it cannot be falsified by events, and it is the only kind of promise worth having on a day when the thing you were afraid of has actually arrived.

You are not facing this alone and you were never promised that you would not face it. Scripture says when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned, Isaiah 43:2, and the Holy Spirit has been present in every hour of the last month, including the two in the morning ones you have been reading through.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, outdoors, at whatever volume you have. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak was given to you and nothing coming withdraws it. Scripture carries every line here and the Holy Spirit brings them the distance. Nothing here promises exemption; He answers in His own way and the outcome is His, and however He answers, none of it is a verdict on you.

  1. Hope that a verse somewhere says this will not come, you were never in the book and I stop looking for you. The Word of God says when thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee, and in the name of Jesus I take the company instead of the exemption.
  2. Habit of reading Scripture with an ear for if, get out of this house. Scripture says the grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever, Isaiah 40:8, and the Holy Spirit has never once handed me a promise that events could falsify.
  3. Lord, You conceded the water and denied the drowning, and You said I will be with thee before either of us saw what it would look like. I am reading it outdoors with the first word left in, and I am not going looking for a different one.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
