Nothing Happened, and Something Is Wrong

This message is for comfort for the thing no amount of information can address

The gulls come out with the ferry every morning and keep pace the whole way across, and nobody on the deck looks up at them any more.

Thirty-odd people standing in the wind. A woman at the rail with one bare hand flat on the cold metal and her phone in the other. A man beside her checking a score. Two girls in school coats sharing one set of headphones. Everyone on that deck is looking something up, and every one of them is finding it, because that is what the little box in your hand does. Tide times. A word in a crossword. The name of the actor in the thing.

She is not finding it. She types four words, looks at them, deletes them. She types five different words and stops again. The wind gets in under her collar, the water goes past, and the gulls hang off the rail without moving their wings.

Because there is no word for it. That is the trouble. Nothing is wrong with her brother that has a name. Nothing happened. Nobody said anything at a funeral, nobody borrowed money, nobody chose sides. The calls simply got shorter over about four years, the way a shoreline goes without anybody watching it go, and now they are two lines and a thumbs up, and she could not tell you when it turned.

And you know exactly what she is doing with her thumb, because you have done it. You have typed a description instead of a question, because your thing has no name to type. And every result that comes back is nearly it. Nearly. Somebody else's version of almost the same thing, with an event in it, a betrayal, a diagnosis, a date, and yours has none of those, so it is not about you, so you close it and open the next one.

Twelve minutes across. She never sends the search. The signal drops to nothing halfway over the way it always does, and she stands there holding a phone that has stopped being able to help her, and the rail, and twelve minutes of open water.

The prayer that has no words in it

I am not going to tell you what is wrong.

I do not know. Anybody who does not sit at your table and tells you anyway is guessing, and a guess in confident language is how you ended up with fourteen tabs open and no rest in any of them. What I have is smaller than an answer, and heavier, and it holds.

First the honest part, because it is the part nobody writes down.

This is a particular kind of tired. You have been searching for a thing that has no words, which means every attempt at it is also a small failure to describe your own life. And underneath that there is a worse thought, and it comes at you sideways, usually late: if I cannot even say what it is, maybe there is nothing there. Maybe I am making it up. That thought is quiet and corrosive and I doubt you have ever said it to a living soul. Scripture settles that in Romans 8:26, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it rather than these words.

You are not making it up. A thing does not become real by becoming nameable. Ask the land. A slope shifts for years before anyone can say what changed on it, and the changing was not waiting for the word. I am not putting my own idea over you; Scripture says it in Romans 8:26, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it live.

And the searching was never stupidity. It was love, and it was diligence. You went looking because something you care about is in trouble, and that is what a careful person does with a fear. Nobody here is going to lecture you about overthinking. Keep the doctor. Keep the person who actually knows the part that can be known. What follows is not instead of any of that. It is for the part underneath it, the part that no amount of information has ever once touched.

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.Romans 8:26

Read what that sentence takes for granted.

It does not say if you cannot find the words. It assumes you cannot. We know not what we should pray for as we ought is not the exception in that verse, it is the ordinary standing condition of the people it is written about, and Paul puts himself inside the we. Then look at what happens next, because it is not what you have been braced for. It does not say the Spirit waits at the rail while you work out the phrasing. It says He carries it, and He carries it in a sound that is not language at all.

Groanings which cannot be uttered. Not sentences. A sound underneath a sentence.

A few lines earlier in that same chapter, the whole creation is groaning too. The ground does it. The sea does it. Nothing in creation has ever had a vocabulary, and He has never once said come back when you can phrase it.

And there is an older line, from a man who was ill and cornered and out of ways to explain himself: Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee. Not my paragraph. My groaning. The sound you make on a ferry deck with your mouth closed.

Then Jesus, plainest of all: your Father knows what things you have need of, before you ask Him. Before. Which means the asking was never the transfer of the information. You have been treating prayer as a form where the fields must be filled in correctly before anything can be processed, and the reason you have not prayed about this in two years is that you could not complete it. He was never taking notes. He was waiting for your voice. That is not my opinion. Scripture stands behind it in Romans 8:26, and the Holy Spirit brings it near.

You will notice I have still not told you what is wrong between you and whoever is on the other end of that thumbs up. I am not going to. This is the one place I will not help you, and the refusing is the help.

The breakthrough

You have not been failing to find an answer. You have been trying to earn an audience. Scripture holds that ground in Romans 8:26, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it into a room like this one.

Somewhere in the last couple of years you decided, without ever deciding it, that a trouble has to be understood before it can be brought. That you owed God a clear account of it first. So you went to get the account, and there was no account to get, and the thing sat there getting heavier while you searched for permission to set it down.

There is no page for this. There is a Person for this.

That will feel like the smaller offer for about a minute, and then it will not. An answer can be held at arm's length and read twice and closed. A Person has to be spoken to. That is the whole difference, and it is why this is harder than another article and also why it works when another article does not.

I am not promising you that the words arrive. I am not promising the thing resolves, and I would not know. What I can tell you, because Scripture says it plainly and I will not go one inch past it, is that the not-knowing is not the disqualification you have been treating it as. The Spirit is not waiting on your vocabulary. He never was. What is unspeakable to you is not unhearable to Him, and it has been heard every day it had no words.

The bar dropped in the middle of the water and left you holding a phone that could not help. Do not waste that quiet. He is not on the other side of a result.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud too, and say them badly if badly is all you have this morning. You were raised with Christ and seated with Him in the heavenly places, and that is a standing you did not argue your way into and cannot lose by being unable to explain yourself. Now look at what Jesus never once specified. He said faith the size of a mustard seed is enough to speak to a mountain, and a mustard seed was His own picture of the smallest thing there is, but He said nothing whatever about the quality of the sentence. Not its grammar. Not its accuracy. Not whether you could define the mountain before you addressed it. He asked only that it be said to the thing rather than thought about the thing. And the mountain here was never the person you are worried about. It is the settled, reasonable belief that what you cannot name you cannot bring. Say these three straight at that one, in whatever words turn up, and then leave the arranging alone, because the outcome is His and it has always been safe there. Scripture already said it in Romans 8:26, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the work, not the sentence.

  1. Thing with no name, you are fully known, and being unable to spell you has never once put you out of reach. The Word of God says my groaning is not hid from the Lord, so you have been heard every day I could not say you.
  2. Holy Spirit, You make intercession for me with groanings that words cannot carry, and You have never needed me to phrase it properly first. God, I bring You the whole of it unworded and unsorted, in the name of Jesus, and I thank You, because You know what I need before I ask, and Scripture says so, in Romans 8:26, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that intercession now.
  3. Lord, You are near to the brokenhearted, so the blank page is not the verdict on me. Where my searching ends, You, my Shepherd, are already standing. No amount of information reaches this place, but You do, and Scripture says the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, Psalm 34:18, and the Holy Spirit is standing where my searching ends.
