The List Became a Ledger

There are about ninety names in it now. It started with four.

The four were people you actually knew and were actually worried about, and you wrote them down so you would not forget, which was a good instinct and it worked.

Then somebody at church asked you to pray for their mother, and you wrote it down because you meant it. Then a missionary family, then a situation abroad, then a woman whose name you have never quite been sure of who is on there because of something somebody said in 2019.

Nobody ever comes off. That is the mechanism, and it is the whole of the problem in one sentence: things get added and nothing gets removed, and eleven years of a generous woman produces ninety names.

And it has stopped being a list and become an account.

You know how you can tell. It is what happens in you when you miss a day. Not sadness that you did not get to speak to God about your daughter; something else, sharper, closer to the feeling of an unpaid bill.

And there is a small dishonest thing that has crept in, which you have noticed and hated. Sometimes you read down the list rather than pray it, and you get to the bottom, and something in you counts it as done.

What this page will not do

This is the closing category and its rule is that nothing gets added, so let me be clear about what is not coming.

There will be no better system. No rota, no dividing the ninety across seven days, no suggestion about praying for a different group each morning. Those are good ideas and every one of them would be a new thing to keep up, and you have enough. I am not putting my own idea over you; Scripture says it in 1 Peter 5:7, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it live.

I am not going to tell you the list was a mistake. It came out of taking people seriously and it has meant that some of them have been prayed for by somebody when nobody else was doing it.

And I am not going to tell you to cut it down to ten, because you would spend a week deciding which eighty to remove and the deciding would be worse than the carrying.

You are not in arrears with God. Scripture says the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, Psalm 34:18, and nearness is not adjusted by a day that was missed, and the Holy Spirit is in that kitchen with a woman who has ninety names and a feeling like an unpaid bill.

The verse is a throwing word

There is a line in 1 Peter that people quote for comfort and which has a physical action in it worth noticing.

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.1 Peter 5:7

Casting. It is a throwing word. Not carrying carefully, not organizing, not maintaining.

And notice what is being thrown. Not the people; you cannot throw a person. Your care, which is the worry, the holding, the weight of them in you.

That is the distinction this whole page turns on, and it is why the list has become so heavy.

Somewhere in eleven years the list stopped being a way of throwing and became a way of holding. Each name on it is a thing you are keeping, daily, and ninety of them is a considerable amount of keeping for one woman at a kitchen table before seven in the morning. That is not my opinion. Scripture stands behind it in 1 Peter 5:7, and the Holy Spirit brings it near.

And then the reason given: for he careth for you.

Not for them, though He does. For you. The reason offered for throwing your care is that somebody is concerned about the one doing the throwing.

You are not the one holding those ninety people. Scripture says casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you, 1 Peter 5:7, and the throwing is a transfer rather than a method of holding better, and the Holy Spirit has never once made anybody the keeper of a list.

What the counting has done

You have noticed it and it is worth saying plainly, because saying it takes some of its force. Scripture holds that ground in 1 Peter 5:7, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it into a room like this one.

A ledger needs completion. That is what a ledger is. So a missed day is not a missed day; it is an outstanding item, and outstanding items accumulate, and by Thursday you are behind. This rests on Scripture in 1 Peter 5:7, and on the Holy Spirit who makes what is written a living thing.

That is why reading the list has begun to substitute for praying it. When a thing becomes an account, getting to the bottom is what counts, and your honest heart has been quietly appalled by that for about a year without being able to stop it.

The dishonesty is not yours. It is what happens to anybody who converts a relationship into a schedule, and the conversion happened by accretion rather than by decision.

You are not failing at something you agreed to. Scripture says my yoke is easy, and my burden is light, Matthew 11:30, and both words describe weight rather than diligence, and the Holy Spirit has never issued a ninety-name obligation to anybody before seven in the morning.

What is set down

The accounting. Not the people.

Nobody is being removed from your concern and nothing is being taken from anybody on that list. The thing being put down is the ledger: the completion, the arrears, the getting to the bottom.

Shut the book.

Then pray for one person. Out loud, with the notebook closed, whichever name comes to you, and it will almost certainly be one of the original four because that is how a heart works when it is not being managed.

That is the whole instruction and there is nothing after it. Not one name a day as a new system. One name, tonight, with the book shut.

And if tomorrow you pray for three, that is three. If you pray for none, nobody is in arrears, because the account has been closed and there was never a creditor.

You are not carrying ninety people. Scripture says come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest, Matthew 11:28, and the rest is given rather than scheduled, and the Holy Spirit is not requiring a completed round before He hears anybody.
