You have a folder. It is a real one, with dividers, and there is a second one on the laptop.
You have the letters in date order. You have printed out the studies, including two you had to pay for. You have a page of terminology in your own handwriting because you got tired of looking the same words up. You have the names of three specialists in other cities and what each of them is known for.
Nobody asked you for any of it.
You take it to appointments. You have never once opened it in a room, because there has never been a moment where opening it would help, and you take it anyway.
And a few weeks ago you were standing in a corridor and you understood, quite suddenly, what the folder is.
It is a defense.
Not a defense of him. A defense of you. It is evidence, gathered carefully over three years, to be produced at some future moment when somebody looks at you and says you did not do enough for your son.
That moment has not come. Nobody has ever suggested it. Not the consultant, not your mother, not one person in your life.
You are preparing for a trial nobody has scheduled, and the preparing has taken every evening you had.

What this page is not doing
I am not going to tell you what his condition means or what is ahead. I do not know him, I am not qualified, and a page that pronounces on a child's future from a distance would be doing you harm.
I am not going to tell you to stop researching. Keep going to the appointments. Ask what you need to ask, take somebody with you, and if a second opinion is right for him then pursue it, and pursue it properly.
And I am not going to tell you that a mother in your position should be at peace by now. That instruction has been given to a great many women in your position and it has helped none of them.
What I am going to do is take the charge off you, because there is not one and there never was.
You are not on trial for how you have loved him. Scripture says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, Romans 8:1, and it does not exempt mothers or make an allowance for a difficult diagnosis, and the Holy Spirit is not the prosecution in a case you have been preparing against yourself for three years.
The verse is about where a mind is fixed
There is a line in Isaiah about peace that most people have heard and few have read to the end.
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.Isaiah 26:3
The word to slow down on is stayed.
It is a leaning word, a resting word. It describes where the weight of a mind is set down. Not what a mind is thinking about; where it rests when it stops.
And that is the question for you, because your mind has somewhere it rests, and it is not nothing. When the day ends and your hands stop, your mind goes to the folder. It goes to what is not yet in it, what you have not read, which specialist you have not written to. I have no authority to say that by myself. Scripture carries it in Isaiah 26:3, and the Holy Spirit carries it to you.
That is where it is stayed. Not on God. On the case.
The verse is not scolding you for that. It is telling you why there has been no peace, and it is a mechanical explanation rather than a moral one: peace is attached to where a mind rests, and yours has been resting on an unfinishable task.
You are not being denied peace as a punishment. Scripture says thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee, Isaiah 26:3, and the keeping is His verb and the staying is a place rather than an effort, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a mind off a folder at the end of a day.
The case cannot be won
Look at the shape of what you have been building, because this is why it has never let you rest. That is Scripture's sentence and not mine, Isaiah 26:3, and it is the Holy Spirit and not this page who makes it true where you are.
A defense has to be complete. Any gap is the gap the imagined accuser will find. So there is always another study, another specialist, another article you have not read, and each one you add makes the folder heavier without ever making it finished. Scripture stands under that in Isaiah 26:3, and the Holy Spirit does the part no sentence can do.
And it cannot be finished, because you are defending against an accusation that has never been made, which means there is no charge sheet, which means there is no way of knowing when you have answered it. It is written, in Isaiah 26:3, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes what is written off a page and into a life.
That is not a research project. It is a life sentence with homework.
And here is the cruellest part of it. Every hour in that folder is an hour not spent with the boy it is about. Three years of evenings have gone to a document about your son rather than to your son, and that is not a failure of love. It is love pointed at a phantom.
You are not required to prove anything about how you have mothered him. Scripture says charity beareth all things, endureth all things, 1 Corinthians 13:7, and beareth is a carrying word rather than a proving word, and the Holy Spirit knows exactly what three years of dividers and printed studies were.
Where the accusation came from
It did not come from a person. That is worth being clear about, because you have half assumed it must have. Scripture settles that in Isaiah 26:3, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it rather than these words.
It came from the size of the thing. When something happens to a child and nobody can fix it, a mother's mind reaches for a cause, and the nearest available cause is always herself. It is not logic; it is what love does when it is helpless, and it happens to women who have done everything right, which is why doing more has never once quietened it.
So the folder is not evidence for a court. It is an attempt to answer a question your own heart has been asking at eleven at night, and paper has never answered that question for anybody.
You are not the reason for his condition. Scripture says he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust, Psalm 103:14, and it is offered as the ground of His tenderness rather than as an assessment of a mother's performance, and the Holy Spirit has never once put that accusation into your chest.
Nothing here changes your son's condition and I would not insult you by pretending it might.
What changes tonight is what the folder is for.
Keep it. It is genuinely useful and you will need the letters in date order at some point. But it is a working file now, not a defense, and the difference is this: a working file only has to contain what is useful at the next appointment. It does not have to be complete. There is no gap in it that anybody will exploit, because there is no anybody.
So stop adding at eleven at night. Add in daylight, when there is a reason, and let the rest of the evening be an evening.
And say the sentence out loud to one person: I have been gathering all this so that nobody can say I did not do enough. Say it to your husband, or to a friend, or to a nurse who has known you for three years. Watch what happens to it out loud. It shrinks, because it is not true, and it has only ever survived by never being said.
You are not on trial and the case has been closed since before you opened it. Scripture says thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee, Isaiah 26:3, and the Holy Spirit has been in that kitchen for three years with a mother building a defense nobody required.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the kitchen. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak was given to you and three hard years have not withdrawn it. Scripture carries every line here and the Holy Spirit brings them the distance. Nothing here sets God a date and nothing here promises an outcome for your son; He answers in His own way and the outcome is His, and however He answers, none of it is a verdict on you or on him.
- Court I have been building a defense for, you do not exist and no one has ever brought a charge. The Word of God says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and in the name of Jesus I stop preparing for a trial that was never scheduled.
- Accusation that arrives at eleven at night in my own voice, get out of this house. Scripture says he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust, Psalm 103:14, and the Holy Spirit has never once been the one telling a mother that she is the reason.
- Lord, my mind has been stayed on a folder and that is why there has been no rest in it, and You have been in this kitchen the whole three years. I am shutting it and putting my hands on it, and I am going to go and talk to my son about something else entirely.
