The Forecasts I Can Recite

You could give the numbers now without looking. That is how far this has gone.

The eleven per cent figure. The thing about the second half of next year. The report that came out in March and the one that contradicted it in June, and the piece somebody wrote about why the March one was optimistic, which you have read twice.

You know which analyst is usually gloomy and which one has been wrong before. You have opinions about their methodology, which is not a word you would have used two years ago.

And this morning you went out and did the same work you have done for nineteen years, and not one of those figures changed a single thing about how the day went.

That is the part that has begun to get at you.

You are not a man who panics. You have been through a bad year before and you know what one looks like from the inside. You are not reading because you enjoy it and you are certainly not reading for entertainment.

You are reading because the thing is bigger than you and moving without you, and reading is the only action available at half past ten at night that feels like a response.

But it is not a response. It is a way of standing very close to something you cannot reach, and the closer you stand the more of your evenings it takes.

You have read enough. Not enough to be safe, because nothing reads you into safety. Enough that the reading is now the second problem.

What this page will not do

I am not going to tell you the decline is not real. You would put the page down and you would be right to. Something is genuinely happening to your trade and nobody who works in it needs it explained by a stranger.

I am not going to tell you to stop planning. Talk to whoever needs talking to. If there is advice worth taking about the business, take it, and take it from somebody who knows the sector rather than from an article.

And I am not going to tell you that faith would have you unbothered. A man with a family and nineteen years in a thing that is contracting is supposed to be bothered. That is not a defect in his faith; it is a working conscience.

What I am going to name is the difference between planning and reading.

You are not being punished for the state of an industry. Scripture says I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound, Philippians 4:12, and Paul is writing from inside the lean half rather than looking back at it from comfort, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a man steady in a year that will not add up.

The question in the middle of the sermon

There is a question Jesus asks in the middle of a passage about worry, and it is the shortest thing in the passage and the sharpest.

Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?Matthew 6:27

Notice it is a question and not a rebuke. He does not say worrying is wicked. He asks what it produces.

Taking thought there is not planning. The word behind it is the divided, pulled-apart attention of somebody whose mind is being drawn in several directions by a thing they cannot fix. It is what your evenings have been doing.

And one cubit unto his stature is deliberately absurd. He picks something nobody could add by any effort at all, and asks whether the taking thought has added even that.

Put your own figures in the question. Eleven per cent. The second half of next year. The March report.

Which of them, held in your head at half past ten at night, has added one hour of work to your yard?

You are not producing anything with those evenings. Scripture says which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature, Matthew 6:27, and it is asked as a question about output rather than as an accusation about character, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man notice what a habit is actually yielding.

Planning and reading are not the same animal

Here is the distinction, because you have been treating them as one thing and defending the second with the reasons that belong to the first. That is Scripture's sentence and not mine, Matthew 6:27, and it is the Holy Spirit and not this page who makes it true where you are.

Planning has an object. It ends in a decision, a phone call, a figure written down, a conversation with the bank or the buyer or your wife. It is finite, it can be done in daylight, and when it is finished you know it is finished.

Reading about the sector at half past ten has no object. It does not end in anything. Nothing in your yard is different the next morning, and the proof is that you have been doing it for months and can produce no decision that came out of it. Scripture stands under that in Matthew 6:27, and the Holy Spirit does the part no sentence can do.

That is not laziness on your part. It is that the reading is not for deciding. It is for the feeling of being on top of a thing that is not under anybody's control, and that feeling is worth about four minutes and then it wants renewing.

You are not obliged to keep watch over an industry. Scripture says except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain, Psalm 127:1, and the watchman in that verse is doing real work and doing it uselessly, and the Holy Spirit is not asking anybody to sit up over a thing He has not put in their hands.

What your evenings are for

Nineteen years. Your evenings have gone somewhere and you have not noticed where. It is written, in Matthew 6:27, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes what is written off a page and into a life.

You used to sit with your wife after the news. You used to do something with your hands that was not work. There was a period when you read books, actual ones, and you could not tell me the last one you finished.

The forecasts have taken that, an hour at a time, and given you nothing in exchange except a set of numbers you can recite to nobody.

And here is the thing to see clearly. If the trade contracts and the hard version comes, you will need those evenings. You will need a marriage that has been sat in, a body that has slept, and a head that is not already worn out from twelve months of pre-worrying an event that has not happened.

The evenings are not a luxury you can spend on this. They are the reserve.

You are not required to spend the reserve in advance. Scripture says sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof, Matthew 6:34, and it is a boundary drawn around one day by somebody entirely realistic about trouble, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that boundary hold for a man at half past ten with a phone in his hand.
